Outsider carver Bartolomeo Mereu nicknamed Banana (1935) lives in Sardinia in his house near the port of Cala Gonone near Dorgali where he was born.

He grew up in a family of farmers with four other siblings. He stopped going to school after the third grade and in adulthood to attended various evening classes. Up to nineteen years he helped his parents with work in the fields and then left to seek his fortune abroad working ten years in Belgium and Germany.

When he returned to his native Sardinia, he bought a bar that he transformed into an ice-cream shop for thirty-nine years. In 2015 he had his first exhibition in Dorgali.
