Jean-François Maurice

(1948–2014)

Jean-François Maurice died prematurely on March 6, at the age of 66. A philosophy teacher, he was for almost 30 years one of the most important participants of the cultural life in the city of Cahors (Lot), France, and its local region. In 1991, he launched the magazine Gazogène, mainly dedicated to art brut and to all kinds of marginal creations.

Jean-François always did pioneering work and contributed to the discovery of many folk or outsider artists. He curated important exhibitions on Gaston Mouly, Emile Ratier and, more recently, Marie Espalieu, at the Fine Art Museum in Cahors. Jean-François Maurice will be missed by all of his friends and will be irreplaceable in the milieu of followers of outsider and folk art.
