"The Sin Eater" by Straiph Wilson

Straiph Wilson's entry into the 2019 Raw Vision short film competition.

Developed for the Raw Vision short film competition, "The Sin Eater" is a poetic imagination of old braid Scots spoken word and archaic pictish drone sound.

It’s an evolving continuation of chthonic religious iconography work that parallels ceramic sculptures, by the same name, recently exhibited at the Copenhagan outsider gallery.

The development of the character “The Sin Eater” is influenced from Scottish folklore which depicts a person who consumes a ritual meal in order to magically take on the sins of a person. The food was believed to absorb the sins of a recently deceased person, thus absolving the soul of the person.

Sin eaters, therefore, carried the sins of all people whose sins they had eaten under the burden of fear riddled together with misery.
