"The Road Less Traveled" is a yearlong exploration of art environments. This series of 15 exhibitions presents the work of 17 art environment builders from the Arts Center’s collection, and also incorporates new writing and works of art produced by scholars, curators, musicians, and theorists in response to the environments. 

Exhibitions include:

"Greetings, Hello and Boo! Mary Nohl" (April 30 – August 27, 2017), with works by the wood-carver, painter, sculptor, ceramist, printmaker, potter, writer, illustrator, and jeweller.

"Pasaquoyanism: Eddie Owens Martin (until May 7, 2017), which includes paintings, sketches, and the artist’s ceremonial garb.

"The World in a Garden: Nek Chand" (until June 4, 2017), presenting the important connection between the terrain of the garden and the rich variety and multiplicity of the sculptures therein.

"American Sites: Art Environment Photography" (April 16 – September 2, 2017), with 65 of Fred Scruton’s photographs, revealing the breadth and depth of art environments throughout the US.    

"An Encounter with Presence: Emery Blagdon and Shannon Stratton" (until December 3, 2017) presents Blagdon's Healing Machine and Stratton's Sonambients sounding sculptures.

"It's Gotta Be In Ya: Fred Smith" (until December 31, 2017), with Smith's concrete sculptures.

"The Making of a Dream: Loy Bowlin" (until January 5, 2019), featuring Bowlin's newly preserved “Beautiful Holy Jewel Home”.
