Comme des Garcons and Raw Vision in Partnership

Comme des Garcons and Raw Vision in Partnership

In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Raw Vision, international Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons will be working closely with the magazine throughout the year. Raw Vision is allowing Comme des Garçons to use images and layouts from all its past magazines as the basis for its worldwide communication purposes for the whole of 2014.

Between 20 and 30 communication leaflets, in the form of mini booklets (Direct Mailings), will be made and sent to interested parties around the world. Every year, Comme des Garçons works with an artist or creative group, whereby they give Rei Kawakubo permission to use existing work which she renders completely new again, through graphic creations and sometimes additions of other work.

The first Raw Vision artists to be featured have been Anne Grgich and Howard Finster.

SOUL STIRRING African American Self-Taught Artists from the South

SOUL STIRRING African American Self-Taught Artists from the South

The late, renowned, self-taught artists honored in this important exhibition created stirring artworks with a variety of media. Leroy Almon imbued his carvings with devout faith; Sam Doyle painted Gullah history on cast-off roofing tin; Roy Ferdinand illustrated graphic urban tableaux on posterboard; Clementine Hunter rendered rich biographical paintings in oil; Sister Gertrude Morgan painted inspired testaments on recycled paper; Nellie Mae Rowe added delightful titles to her color-filled works; Herbert Singleton carved socio-politically themed wood bas reliefs; and the indomitable Purvis Young artfully renewed his neighborhood. The absence of formal training and lack of funds did not stifle our honorees’ creative spirits or diminish their commitments to their communities. The originality and intensity of their artworks vividly establishes their indelible contributions to American art.

Sam Farber 1927 - 2013

Sam Farber 1927 - 2013

The outsider art world was in shock and sadness today after the death was announced of Sam Farber. Sam Farber was one of the great pioneers of the appreciation of outsider art and was instrumental in the growth of its acceptance in the USA, and indeed in other countries too. His first visit to the Collection de l'art brut in the 1980s left him totally overwhelmed and his enthusiasm for outsider art and art brut never diminished. He was a very early supporter of Raw Vision magazine and helped it to establish itself and also to survive any stormy patches. He was also the principle force behind the American Folk Art Museum embracing outsider art into ints remit and the formation of its Contemporary Center. He built up one of America's early collections of international outsider art and recently donated a huge sculptural piece by Pascal Verbena to the Collection de l'art brut.
Our sympathies and thoughts go to his wife Betsey and his family.
